Hello and WELCOME TO MY HAMMERFILE

I started hunting right around age 13, not counting the occasional rabbit or squirrel in the back yard. Who would have guessed it would become one of my life's greatest passions.

My family, raised by a single Mom, did not hunt. My Uncle Henry and Grandpa introduced me to fishing. Another lifelong hobby I am happy to be able to pass on to my boys.

With that being said, I am a self-taught hunter. Luckily my Mom was supportive and helped me along the way. Countless magazines were scattered around the house. My thirst for knowledge seemed never ending to her. It was tough going in those younger days. I had to borrow a shotgun from an Uncle for those first couple years. Mom had to drive me to find places I could hunt and take me back when it was time. I even walked to a spot or two. Try hiking through town with a shotgun these days and see what happens! Just one of the many benefits of growing up in a small rural farming community.

When I turned 16 and was able to drive my passion for hunting took on a whole new level. Opportunities abound when you are not limited to walking distance! This was about the time I also "talked" my cousin David into doing some hunting with me. Wow did we "hammer" the pheasants back then. Neither of us had a dog back then and we had to learn the hard way where the birds like to be and when. Those are some times I will never forget.

This was also about the time I started hunting whitetail deer. I can remember that first deer like it was yesterday, a flat top that was pushed to me on a drive. My first big buck encounter did not turn out so well. Hunting with my cousins near their farm we had seen this big 12 point use a small patch of trees all summer. We went in after him and when the smoke cleared I stood there with an empty gun and watched that rack disappear across the field. Can you say... BUCK FEVER!!

That fever has never gone away, just grown over the years. Whitetails became my obsession that very instant. Very rarely a day goes by that I am not thinking about deer or deer hunting. Countless hours are logged glassing the countryside looking for a glimpse of a whitetail. I share this with my boys now and they are always in a race to spot one before I do. Sometimes they do just that, and I can see my passion in their eyes.

Well I hope you enjoyed reading my little profile. I would love to hear from you. Drop me a little note, a story of a hunt, some pictures, or ask a question. You can reach me at mnwhitetailfever@yahoo.com
